How do I know if you’re the right therapist for me?

How do I know if I need therapy?
I tend to work best with people who are intellectually curious, reflective, motivated to understand themselves and examine patterns and, in couples work, want to do right by their relationship.
Others have remarked on my warmth and supportiveness, my inquisitiveness and insight, the breadth of my experience, and my ability to challenge appropriately and keep therapy on track.
Some people come with a specific problem, such as a loss, a relationship strain, or a decision they can’t make. Others come because something feels off or unsettled inside or they want more from life, but don’t know what it is. If you are curious about yourself and eager to make your life more fulfilling, therapy may be a good place to do that.

I’ve worked effectively with many couples who did not find previous couples therapy helpful. However, it depends on how all three people- the therapist and each partner- present themselves in therapy and, for the partners, in the relationship.
The experience and personality of the couples therapist matters. The couples therapist should be proactive in directing the work while also allowing each person to feel supported and encouraged.

What if we’ve tried couples therapy without success?
Many people seek couples therapy when their relationship is in crisis, such as when there is an affair or significant discord or disconnect. Yes, couples therapy can be helpful during those times: Motivation can be high and a learning to respond differently can allow for repair and create a new sense of closeness.
However, couples therapy isn’t just for those in crisis. It can be helpful for those who would like to feel more connected and understand their partner and their relationship better. It can also be helpful before a life transition. Some find couples therapy helpful before marriage or in preparation for parenthood, empty nest or retirement since it can provide a space to voice hopes, anticipate challenges and identify paths to resiliency.

I am not on any insurance panels. If you meet medical necessity, I can provide a Superbill that you can submit to your insurance. You would be responsible for determining whether the services qualify for reimbursement under your plan.

Typically, individual sessions are initially held weekly. In the case of a crisis, I may meet with someone more frequently. Sessions are sometimes scaled back to every other week depending on need.
For couples therapy, I typically meet with the couple for 80 minutes the first week, then each person individually for 50 minutes the second week, and then with the couples (80 minutes) the third week. Frequency and length are determined by each couple’s needs and availability.
